[NTUVAS ] Comics Ensemble Meeting

Hey all,

Half-dead chair here. (technically all chairs are non-living anyway)

Just wanna let you guys know of our next meeting which is tomorrow!! (It has always been now that i think of it ~_~, since i always NEARLY forget to send out the email :-P)

Not much new changes (alright fine, no change at all except the date) to the details which are as follows:

Comics Ensemble Meeting (Testing to see if size of font grabs people's attention)

Date: 1st Feb 2012 (FEB ALREADY?)

Time: 7pm to 9pm

Venue: South spine TRs <( Once again, meeting venue will be posted on Facebook VAS members feed Group 2hrs beforehand, sign will be posted outside the door)

Why: Because you love us. Alright never mind.. ignore that. Bad Joke.

Main things to note, we'll be having a few announcements on the upcoming events - (in case you missed all the meetings and previous announcements...)

Visual Arts Society (Coen and Anw) will be organising two events the following two weeks :

Anime Revelation

Dates: 8th Feb 2012 (1st Squad)

9th Feb 2012 (Byousoku 5cm aka 5cm/s)

Time: 7pm till (whatever time the movie ends.)

Member Free only event, otherwise membership registration is available for $2

Photoshop Workshop

Dates: 15th Feb 2012 (Photography and Photoshop Basics)

16th Feb 2012 (Photo Editting Tutorial)

Time: 7pm to 9pm

Place: EEE iHub (S2.2-B4-05)

Course is Priced at $14 for 1 day, $25 for both.

More Importantly, VAS will be having our publicity booth this week on Thursday and Friday and we will definitely need the help of you guys!! +_+

Hopefully as and when you guys are free, do come down to help us man the booth! (whispers: and help publicise our events!!)

Kalafina - 『ANiME FESTiVAL ASiA in シンガポール』

If you remember, Kalafina was in Singapore last year for AFA 11, where they performed a most memorable live. I was lucky enough to get a front row ticket, and let me tell you, it's an experience I won't give up for the world.

Anyway, as is common among Japanese artists, Kalafina talked about their experiences in Singapore once they returned to Japan. I have attempted to translate what they said here. Please enjoy, and don't blame me for any mistranslations or stuff.

Recently I just learned how to eat Xiao Long Baos off those little glass plates, I'm so proud of that.

Good afternoon, everyone~(´∇｀)

This is Wakana(O￣∇￣O)／

We have safely returned from Singapore!!
We're come back home!

This time we particpated in Singapore's AFA, and it really was a stimulating experience, with extreamly fun things to do everyday.

There's so much greenry on Singapore's roads, with all the trees lining up along the streets - it makes for walking down the street a soothing and relaxing experience.

During one of our free times, we went walking around the hotel - it took about 5000 steps to go round the whole building!

...Just joking!!

But I can make my way to certain places without getting lost, I can pretty much remember the way.(＾ω＾)

Well then, Kalafina's live was held two days ago, and before the live we took part in many events too.

First of all, we had the chance to meet and greet all our fans on the day of the live, together with our fellow artists!
The number of fans far exceeded our expectations - I'm so happy! ヽ(´∇`)/

We can't hide our surprise at seeing this ヽ(´∇`)/

As the live approached we got increasingly excited
(゜∀゜ )( ゜∀゜)

We then moved to the booth for the autograph signing session☆
I'm very glad that so many people came!

We then went to trouble the butlers at the Butler Cafe! (＾ω＾)

It's our first time going to a Butler Cafe, and that it would be in Singapore...!!
(〇゜ε゜〇)
I never saw that coming.

When we heard the butlers going ""Be careful on your way, Ojou-sama!", we couldn't help but smile and laugh. It's just like a performance or something you see on Nico Nico Douga!

I've always thought it pretty amazing that people all over the world can use the computer to see each other in real time - it really is pretty amazing.
It's almost as if the future is already here, yes?

And just like that, the time has finally come for the live!!

As for the concert hall....The liveliness is amazing! (You can feel the ground shaking. It's really the MAX!)

We got a look at the seating area during our rehearsals, and it was quite large, but the number of people who were actually there far exceeded our expectations.

Here we go.

#1『overture～Magia』。

The "Mahou Shoujo Madoka" spirit in Singapore is going strong!!
When the opening bars of the song started playing, a thremedous roar filled the air!

Next up is the theme song from the 1st animated movie of the "Kara no Kyoukai" series.

#2『oblivious』。

During the autograph session, someone told us "We know of Kalafina's work in 'Kara no Kyoukai'! ".
From the lively audience responcd during our introduction,

Next up, from the anime "Kuroshitsuji I and II",

#3『輝く空の静寂には』
#4『Lacrimosa』。

As expected, this was popular too. The audience responded with a roar the moment we said the name of the songs. The energy in the crowd was amazing, and we could really feel the love you have for the music of Japan.
It really makes me happy.

And then we sang the theme song from the 5th Kara no Kyoukai movie,

#5『sprinter』、

and from our first album, 「Seventh Heaven」, we have

#6『音楽』.

It never fails to surprise me that when we perform in overseas events, everyone would sing along together with us in Japanese.
I really felt this espeically during 『sprinter』.
And 『音楽』 just proved that music can transverse language and culture, and that the enjoyment of music is not bound by national borders. I'll always remember this feeling.

And finally, we bid our farewell with our last song, from the anime "Sora no Woto",

The crowd responded to Keiko's words, "Please listen, 光の旋律", with a deafening roar!

A warm feeling of joy just blossomed in my chest.

To all our warm fans in Singapore, as well as everyone who came, thank you very much!

And with that, ends our whilwind live Kalafina!

We expect to be heading to that place tomorrow~!!

[NTUVAS] COEN CNY MEETING (Hail the year of the Dovah)‏

Wishing everyone a happy chinese new year! As we enter the year of the Dovah, hope you people had a nice long weekend break~

(I missed my ang paos/ba gua since my family escaped overseas this year... (T_T) )

While we're still getting our minds (if we haven't lost them or soaked it alcohol) back to school mood, VAS is also having something different (or so i heard, haven't been paying attention much as i'm kinda busy cursing my early morning classes tomorrow on Chu san....)

So what's new this week is that VAS will be celebrating CNY too! (I was told its a tradition thingy but oh well *.*)

Sorry for the uber short notice but if you people have any CNY themed outfits you may also wear em'. (Non-Compulsory)

Expect things like lou hei and stuff this meeting (tomorrow) (I haven't attended before but it'll be special~) For Comics Ensemble, if time allows we should also continue to revise drawing too (*guilty of slacking off* *sorry ><*) If there are any special requests do bring it up and we can cater the lesson for your needs :D

AnimeWorks Meeting #9 - BRING OUT THE ANG PAOS‏

Hey everyone,

Happy Chinese New year!! Hope that you have been having a good time collecting those moolah or having a good rest if you are not collecting moolah. XD But yes we will be having meeting tmr~ (aka Wednesday) <-- Although I totally don't have any classes OTL

The meeting will be CNY themed~ Traditionally, VAS has a lou hei tradition (..although trust me, our Yu Sheng is pretty.......un-traditional) XD so do come down to celebrate it with us!~ :3 One of our members has requested for some CNY clothes, so anyone that has any and doesn't mind wearing them for the event can come down in their pretty clothes~ :3 She'll take nice pictures, she promises. XD It is not compulsory though, but she'll (we'll) greatly appreciate it!~

(I'll probably see if I can make the meeting more CNY-ish. XD...no promises *winks*)

[NTUVAS] Comics Ensemble Meeting: Before the Storm (of festivities)‏

Hi all!

We're now a week into the new sem, hope everyone's still alive and kicking (hopefully not the bucket).

YESH, we'll be having one more meeting before Chinese New Years which will be this Wednesday, 18th January 2012, yup you heard right one more meeting before everyone disappears off over the extra-long weekend extort- i mean money collecting :P.

If you are wondering what else exactly is going to happen this semester then I have news (*drumroll*).... Comics Ensemble will be conducting a 2 DAY PHOTOSHOP COURSE THIS FEBRUARY 2012! (Don Don don pachi pachi pachi~) (Although technically i might have mentioned this somewhere last semester before as a passing remark..lols)

The finer details need to be roughed out however so we will need some finalisations on this aspect. >_<

[NTUVAS Comics Ensemble] First Meeting of Semester!!

Hey guys (and gals),

Wishing you guys a Happy new year~

Hope y'all had a decent holiday and its back to school for another fun-filled semester~! (gets stoned). For those who went to the Chalet hope you guys have revived from being an undead. ^_^

Alright, welcome back to school nonetheless :D.While we're all (or at least some) are griping about our new classes/teachers or horrible time-tables, we'll be having our first COMICS ENSEMBLE MEETING OF THE SEMESTER! (Something to LOOK FORWARD TO)

Just to serve as a notice to all, the main event that we'll (VAS) be involved in this semester will be ARTS FIESTA!! So our meeting agenda (besides the usual drawing) will include some announcements and discussion (and planning) for the event. :) Details as follows -

AnimeWorks Meeting #7 - THE BEGINNING‏

Aye~ to all VAS people out there,

Welcome back to school for another wonderfully (torturous) new semester. XD I'm sure most that went to the chalet are still somewhat on chalet high..I was refusing to acknowledge the start of school today OTL *claws*

But there is always a sliver lining! THAT MEANS VAS ANIMEWORKS MEETINGS ARE BACK AND BETTER THAN BEFORE! *gets bricked*

This semester will be filled with the largest and probably funnest event (...chalet..not included >w<) in VAS! Arts Fiesta!!~

Hence this week's meeting's agenda (besides watching and laughing over stupid chalet videos and stuff) is also to work out what we wanna do for Arts Fiesta. :3

The Backwater Gospel

Every now and then, you come across a clip of such brilliance and beautiful work that you just got to share it with the world. The following clip is one such video.

Please enjoy, The Backwater Gospel .

According to the video description, The Backwater Gospel is a bachelor film project, from what I presume to be a group of students. That is pretty impressive.

What I liked about this short work, is that with just the cast of a handful of characters, the creators were able to tell story with a message. With the likes of Twilight and their horde of fans flooding the market, God knows we are in need of some good storytelling. And that is what we have here.

From this point on, I will be talking at length on my thoughts on The Backwater Gospel. Spoilers will be includes, so if you haven't watched it yet, please do.

First of all, apart from the obvious religious message, one has to question the role of the Undertaker. The entire story does revolve around his presence. Is he necessarily evil? We do see devilish wings growing out of his back in certain scenes, and he can be said to be the catalysis that lead to the catastrophic events in the town. Who is he?

In my opinion, the Undertaker is a force of nature. Like the Death he represents, he comes naturally to the town to remove their dead...or soon to be dead, as it is. But he does not bring death. People die whether or not the Undertaker comes....but the townsfolk have linked the Undertaker's presence to the eminent death of somebody in the community. Of course, no one wants to die, and so they barricade themselves in their homes to protect themselves from the outside threat.

The Undertaker, however, sat unmoving from the center of the town. And so the villagers waited for someone to die, praying that it would be them. The days go by, and supplies became scarce. At their wits end, they turn to their spiritual leader, with disastrous results.

If we look at this from a metaphorical point of view, the Undertaker can be said to be the avatar for one of two things: change, or the Outsider.

Why change? Change comes, whether you want it or not. As the saying goes, "The only constant is change." But as human beings, we are always looking for stability. We want something solid in our lives, something that we can hold on to. That is why we resist change. Unfortunately, change, when it comes, is here to stay, as evident by the Undertaker arriving to, and refusing to leave, from the village. The video can be interpreted as saying that it is futile to resist change, and that trying to do so can lead to disaster. Inside, if we can accept the change (ie to say, accept presence of the Undertaker), and go on with life, then things will work out. This can be seen in how nothing happened to the bard throughout the week, even through he has been sitting pretty much right in front of the Undertaker the whole time.

If we choose to look at the Undertaker as the Outsider, then pretty much the same point holds. In our globalized world, it is not uncommon to be working beside people who are foreign to your country. This is espeically so in my home country of Singapore, where our loose immigration laws has seen an influx foreign nationalities moving to the country for work or other purposes.

This has, of course, lead to a conflict of interests between them as us, the people. We do feel that they are here, taking our jobs, scoring our grades (and messing up my bell curve, haha). Like the villagers in the video, tensions can run high, at times. Take, for example, the Lambing Flat riots in Sydney. That is an example of what can come to terms if we are unable to accept the presence of foreigners within the country - not just accepting, but welcoming them with open arms and making them a part of the society.

If not, you will end up like this lady here:

Of course, I understand that it takes two hands to clap. The foreigners have to try to adapt themselves into the host culture too, instead of hanging around their own ethic groups. Like, if the Undertaker had bothered to talk to the villagers, or if the villagers had bothered to talk to him, then perhaps we might not have had such a bloody ending.

That's about the Undertaker. Now, like I said earlier, there's a very obvious message about the role of religious in the whole video. And because I'm pretty lazy, I'm not going to talk about them. If you want to do so, feel free to post a comment down below, and we can discuss things.

AnimeWorks Meeting #6 - THE LAST DINNER‏

YES. THIS IS OUR LAST MEETING. BOO HOO. AFTER ALL THE AWESOME OF HALLOWEEN ><

(well, it is officially the last meeting, but we can always meet up and attempt to study. yeah. that is why we are in university no? Study...unless that sounds foreign...then..:D)

As usual with our last meetings we will have dinner together. Yes it is like the last supper. Only much more hip and cool. XD (No offense to any religious nut.)

As we are a bunch of indecisive people (as usual) we would be meeting up first, before forcing ourselves to make a PAINFUL decision on where to eat. XD

AnimeWorks Meeting #5 - HORROR NIGHT‏

Hey all entities out there (yes, this covers girls, guys, traps, and any other species in between),

Hope you guys had fun during the Animation Screening last week! :3 I am touched by those that turned up~ *happy tears* XD Those that did not......sadface.jpg. (jk, jk.)

For next week's meeting, we decided that since Halloween is near, we are going to have a themed meeting!! :3

Come down dressed for Halloween! It can be something really simple, Daiso has $2 hats or some $2 accessories, or if you want GO ALL OUT. Wigs, fangs.WINGS. BLOOD AND GORE. (Holland V has this AMAZING halloween store.) Have fun~ the degree is up to you~ <3 (Although, the best dressed will get a little something from me~ XD) And those who does not come with something will have to put on something (from our random bag of props) of OUR choosing Muahahhahaha <3

If you can/want, bring some halloween related snacks! You can make them (Yum Yum) or get sweets from any cold storage/NTUC :3 Blood chocolate anyone? :9

We will also be screening some horror related clips/movies/anime so do come down to watch with us!~

CARDFIGHT!! Vanguard - English Release Press Conference!

I have had the privilege of attending another press conference today – this time, one on the popular trading card game, “CARDFIGHT!! Vanguard”.

I have no idea what to do given a hand like that. Maybe because I don't actually play the game?

Now personally, I've never played this game. I'm more of a Weiß Schwarz player myself. I do have a Touhou Chaos deck, but that's as far as I've gone into the other card games Buishiroad offers.

I guess I should give a brief description of Buishiroad and the many card games it has under its belt at this point in time. Bushiroad is a relatively new company, being founded in 2007, and their main source of sales comes from the development and selling of trading card games. They are the creators of the Weiß Schwarz, ChaOS, VS, and most recently, “CARDFIGHT!! Vanguard!”.

So anyway, Vanguard (as it is more affectionately known) has grown astronomically in terms of popularity, both in Japan and overseas. The card game has since given birth to an anime and manga series.

So Bushiroad was sitting there, and then some guy came up with the idea of, “Hey! Why not we localize Vanguard for the global market?”

Eureka!

And that brings us to what I’m talking about today. Vanguard is, after all, originally a Japanese card game. There’s a huge language barrier that has to be overcomed should one wants to play the game. That barrier can prove to be a deterrent to even the most die hard TCG fan.

But with the English release of Vanguard, the problem of the language barrier is not an issue! Everyone would be able to play the game. After all, everyone can read and understand English, yes? (And if you can’t, what are you doing on this site, anyway?).

And that brings us to the conference itself. Basically, the key points talked about is that Bushiroad would be pre-releasing two English trial decks (the Buster Blade and the Dragonic Overload decks) on the 11^th of November, 2011, at AFA11. The full game and other booster packs would be made available all across Singapore early next year, and from there, the world.

There’s a hell lot of money involved in this, guys.

Personally, I think it’s a step in the right direction, as far as anime related TCGs are concerned. The mainstay of TCG in general has always been Magic: The Gathering. Fads such as YU-GI-OH! and Pokemon have come and gone, and have carved out their own niche market in the trading card industry.

But anime lovers don’t really have many card games to play with, other than Bushiroad’s Weiß Schwarz and ChaOS. And those are pretty much impossible to localize, given the hellish issue you’re gonna have with all the licensing, so you’re pretty much stuck with having to learn to read all the moon-runes in order to play it.

Vanguard, however, is Bushiroad’s own creation, so they are free to do whatever they want with the franchise, including localizing the whole card game in English. Ahaha.

If the localization is a success and brings Bushiroad lots of moola, maybe they would be more willing to tackle the issue of localizing Weiß Schwarz too.

Hmm…Yeah, that’s most important thing that was discussed at the conference today. Along the way, we also talked about the English dubbing of the Vanguard anime, which will be aired on local television channel otko come 16^th October. Singapore will, in fact, be the first country in the world outside of Japan to actually be able to watch the dubbed version of the anime.

Personally, I would rather listen to it in Japanese, but beggars can be choosers. And besides, given what little preview I have had of the English dub today, it doesn’t seem all that bad. Reasonable quality, if you ask me.

Interestingly enough, homegrown J-Pop group, SEA*A, will be singing the theme song for Vanguard. You can see the PV for their debut song, Dream Shooter, below. SEA*A will also be performing at this year’s AFA.

I guess I should be wrapping this post up now. You will be able to buy the English version of Vanguard when its officially released at all your usual card shops, as well as at your local anime/manga store. Probably. Ahaha.

If you really want it but can’t find it, ask a friend in Singapore to buy it and send it over to wherever it is you live. XD

And in other news totally unrelated to the post,Izumi Kitta, who voiced Misaki in the Vanguard anime, appeared to give her support for the English release of Vanguard. She has slimmed down from when I last saw her. She should eat more.

AFA11 Press Conference!

So I just got back from the AFA Press Conference, and boy, are the highlights exciting this year or what? I can't wait for November to come already~~

The press conference was held at the AKB48 Cafe which I've talked about previously. I haven't actually visited the place yet, so this is the first time I've gone in. It does have a pretty nice atmosphere inside, full of AKB48 posters as you would expect. But this post isn't about AKB48 - lets move on to AFA11!

The conference opened up with the "Cool Japan Forum", which is a business platform where those in the industry can mingle and do their networking. This year, highly regarded character designers, producers, and script writers will be here to give a series of talks as well as to share their experiences with visitors.

Personally, I'm not too sure if they are targeting the right market segment. The Cool Japan Forum seems to be more of the industrialist kind of thing, rather than the otaku and casual anime fan. Still, if you are interested in attending the forum and getting an insight view of how your anime are made, feel free to buy the tickets, which go at $85 a pop. Famous names would include producer Atsuhiro Iwakami (Kara no Kyoukai, Bakemonogatari, Puella Magi Madoka, Fate/Zero), character designer Masayoshi Tanaka (Toradora!, AnoHana, Hitman REBORN!) and voice actress Chiwa Saitou (Akemi Homura, Hitagi Senjougahara).

We immediately jumped right into the heat of things with the focus on Akiba Town. Once again, AFA will be offering exclusive anime merchandise from some of Japan's biggest names (Aniplex, Nitro+, Bushiroad, Bandai, etc).

The Moe Moe Kyun maid cafe and the Atelier Royale butler cafe of last year will be back again, this time with a new cast of maids and butlers. They will be apparently adopting a "Wonderland" theme this year, so look forward to lots of Alice in Wonderland stuff. ^^

AFA will also be screen various anime and anime movies. Some names would include "Full Metal Alchemist: The Star of Milos", "Naruto Shippuden - The Blood Prison" and "Gundam Unicorn Episode 4". Not to mention 3 of the biggest anime to hit us this year - "Puella Magi Madoka Magica", "Ani Hi Nita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi ha mada Shiranai", and my personal favorite, "Fate/Zero".

My inner Typemoon fanboy now compels me to insert a F/Z trailer for the win.

Now, to the more exciting stuff - the I LOVE ANISONG CONERTS!!

Day 1:

This is an artist who needs no introduction. She's the one and only Hatsune Miku. Sure, you might be thinking, "Yeah, she appear here before, no biggie. Just fillers anyway", but that's where you are WRONG!

We will be having a full two hour Miku-licious (Leeku-licious?) concert featuring the virtual diva in all her 3D holographic glory. Yup, you read that right - 3D holograms. No more crappy and jerky images projected onto a screen - holograms are the way to go!

What can I say? Ready your leek lightsticks.

Day 2:

On Day 2, we have FLOW, Ichiro Mizuki, LiSA and Sea*A. Out of the four, I'm most excited about LiSA, after her brilliant role as the singing voice of Yui from the hit anime Angel Beats. Aniki is always a joy to watch, and we have "Jibun wo~~~" to round out the day.

Because LiSA is love.

Day 3:

There's only one name you need to remember for Day 3. Are you ready for it? It's none other than....

KALAFINA!!!!!

Oh sure, Kanako Itou, May'n and Milk Holmes will be there. But KALAFINAAAA!!!!!!

So um, the artist line up for the 3 days can be easily remembered by the following acronym, thought up by Notokawaiiyonoto. Day 1 is just Miku, so no acronym for that. Day 2 is FIL (Flow, Ichiro, Lisa). Day 3 is KKnM( Kalafina, Kanako, may'N, Milky holmes).

11th Oct- Summer Wars

Directed by Mamoru Hosoda, Summer wars is a 2009 animated science fiction
romance film which tells the story of Kenji Koiso, a 11 grade maths genius
who was taken by Natsuki Shinohara, to celebrate her great-grandmother's
90th birthday. However, he is falsely implicated in the hacking of a virtual
world by an artificial intelligence. Kenji must now repair the damage done
to the virtual world and find a way to stop the artificial intelligence from
causing any further damage.

12th Oct- Paprika

Based on Yasutaka Tsutsui 1993 novel, and directed by Satoshi Kon, Paprika
is a 2006 animation science fiction film based on the discovery of a
psychotheraphy treatment called dream therapy in the near future. This is the
journey of Paprika, one of the entries in this dreamscape. The movie is also
significant as it is the first film whose soundtrack uses a Vocaloid, Lola,
for its tracks.

Hope everyone had fun in our first combined Animeworks and CoEN meeting! (For those who couldn't come, there are other chances!)

Now that the time for fun and games is over it's time for.... MORE FUN. (Some people might be wondering if we actually study -_-)

We'll be having our next MEETING This WEEK! (Yes, we have weekly meetings XD). Of course we'll be doing some important admin stuff and plans for the year!

Anyways, for next week we will be moving over to the older TR rooms with PROPER AIR-CONDTIONING (*applause*). Specifically TRs 1 to 28 (depending on which rooms we manage to get), just opposite where we were last week.

Our AGM this year was held on 2nd September 2011 at LT20. The event was a bittersweet one, as we looked back at the fruits of our labour for the past year and bided farewell to the previous main committee. However, this end is just a beginning, as we look towards the new candidates and the future of VAS. The speeches by the candidates were truly heartfelt and memorable, as they shared their visions and missions for the club. After the candidates gave their speeches and voting was done, the new main committee was finally decided.
Pursuant to Section 77, Sub-section 7E, Paragraph A of the VAS Main Committee Elections Act, the new Main Committee for the year of 11/12 is hereby declared as follows:

Here we will be recruiting new members for the club. Do visit our booth if you would like to sign up with VAS for the new academic year and don't forget to bring your friends who are interested too!

If you have not been in the VAS subcommittee before, why not give it a try? You will get to help out in the execution of events and make new friends at the same time. We have frequent outings organised for our subcommittee members too.

If you are feeling passionate about being in charge of the direction of the club and moving the club forward to greater heights, consider signing up as a main committee member. An interview will be required but don't worry, we won't bite :)

Yup, that's right - its a full blown tournament, with 128 players battling it out for the top prize! Do you have what it takes to go deck to deck with the other Weiss Schwarz players in Singapore? Will you Cancel? Or will you eat Soul Damage like a boss? There's only one way to find out!

Cosfest X.1 - OVER!

It has been about 5 days since Cosfest X.1 has ended. All in all, I felt that there was a lot more space at the performance area, probably because they shifted all the doujin booths to the other tent. It made for good posing in the tent, but as usual, the lighting there sucked, so unless you have a good flash, you can't take good shots anyway.

Not that going outdoors is much better. The sun's freaking hot, which is terrible for both the photographers and the cosplayers. Especially the cosplayers. Just spending 5 minutes out there in costume is enough to make one faint.

THE SUFFOCATING, OPPRESSIVE HEAT!!

So, kudos to all the cosplayers out there who made the event enjoyable. Without you, there would not be much point in having a Cosfest.

Peachi is an amazing artist who has done parodies on Metal Gear Solid and Ace Attorney just to name a few. Her ability to draw expressions with simplicity (as well as her sense of humor) really impresses me.

Cosfest X.1 coming this weekend

Sounds more like a sequel to a certain series of role-playing games, if you ask me. Anyway, Cosfest is back again for the 10th time, making it the longest running cosplay event in Singapore.

If you ask me, the mascot for Cosfest this year is a little...ugh.

Be warned through - the website design and layout is enough for any self respecting website designer to want to put out their eyes for the sheer horror of viewing it. But if you are able to gaze into the depths of the abyss and laugh Death in the eye, then you will find all the information you need to know about Cosfest X.1

Of course, you can always continue to read this post. I recommend this option instead.

First up, Cosfest is having a little something new this year. Called "ComicsWorld Asia", it is similar to the Extravaganza event we had at AFAX last year. Aspiring artists are invited to submit their work to be displayed to the teeming horde that will be at Cosfest ( those non AKB48 fans, at least). It's a good way for newer artists to make a name for themselves. Who knows? You might even be drafted into Imaginary Friend Studios! They are good, you know.

Anyway, participating artists will be given their own booth and will be housed in a separate tent which is just beside the D'Marque, so don't worry about there not being enough space.

Apart from that, Cosfest X.1 itself does not offer much in terms of new events. The usual karaoke competition will be held on the 25th of June, and the World Cosplay Summit will once again open its doors to the best cosplayers in the region. The winners will be flown to Japan to represent their country in the Finals of the World Cosplay Summit.

Other than that, there is the Asia Cosplay Meet Championship. This mini-event is meant to foster friendship and bonds between cosplayers from the various countries in Asia. It is a noble aim, yes, and so I wish them all the best.

Hmmm...yeah, that' pretty much covers the major points of Cosfest. Except for the various doujin booths that will be there. This is something that I'm more interested in, but unfortunately, there's no news to be had on who'll be there. I guess you'll just have to go down and find out for yourself.

The aim of cross-eye is to increase awareness of visual arts among the students in NTU through the exhibition of 3D drawings and displays.

These pictures will give the viewer 3D effects. But not everyone has the ability to see the 3D images from such pictures straightaway.

This requires a special viewing technique to combine parts of the drawing into the 3D image.

Animation Revelation (November 2010)

AnimeWorks is proud to bring to NTU two screening sessions of the revamped classic anime hit, Rebuild of Evangelion, as part of our semesterly Animation Revelation screening event!

The Rebuild of Evangelion is a tetralogy of animated films that is a remake of the acclaimed anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion which was released back in 1995. Both of the first two films have been well-received by both fans and audiences alike, having won several awards including Anime of the Year at the 2008 Tokyo International Anime Fair, Theatrical film award at the 13th Animation Kobe Awards and first place in the Animation category of the 2009 French Lyon Asian Film Festival. If you have watched the original series before, expect new scenes, characters, settings and updated graphics; these will be the two films that you DEFINITELY can’t miss!

On 22^nd September 2010, we held our AGM @ LT20. It was an event filled with fun, laughter and joy as we congratulated each other on a job well done for the past year in VAS. We bid sad farewells (somewhat) to our current Main committee of VAS and had our elections for our current committee of VAS. The speeches given during the event were truly memorable; from the shortest and most straightforward ones to the ones that promises things that we would want in the future. After all the speeches and voting (and wonderful refreshments) we finally had a main committee for the year of 2010/2011. Annual General Meeting 2010

The Visual Arts Society would like to invite all its members, past and present, to attend the Visual Arts Society Annual General Meeting, to be held next Wednesday, 7pm at LT20.

In addition to the annual report of our club's activities, we will also be holding the elections for the Visual Arts Society 25th Main Committee for the academic year of 2010/2011. Do come down to choose who you would like to see lead the club in the upcoming year!

Meet and mingle with them at the reception held after the event, which includes free refreshments. Election results will be announced straight after the refreshments.

Under the Visual Arts Society club constitution, only current and former members will be allowed to place their votes during the election.

For those who have previously registered their interest in joining us as a member of the club, payment of yearly membership fees of $2 as well as collection of membership card will be available at the door of the event, officially inaugurating you as a full member of the club. Membership registration is also available for those who have yet to sign up with us.

EXTRAVAGANZA '10 returns to AFA!

We’re back! Extravaganza: An Illustration Showcase once again returns to the highly anticipated. Anime Festival Asia (AFA), South East Asia’s largest Anime Convention! AFA will be happening in Singapore on the 13-14th November 2010 at Suntec Convention Center. We will be hosting our Grand artwork exhibition and prize giving ceremony at the event, with many other fun activities to follow!

Extravaganza is a nation-wide art illustration showcase, celebrating the youth art scene. It consists of the following components:

INK! Concept Art competition, which focuses upon the application of traditional mediums in illustration
GRAPHITE Concept Art competition, which focuses upon the use of digital tools in illustrative arts
SEQUENTIAL ARTS competition, which focuses on the creation of short length comic or storyboarded works.
Kaleidoscope exhibition, which featured high quality digital artworks from our local artists

The overall theme for Extravaganza this year is “Flight” The competition segments are ongoing, with Submission Dateline for artwork on the 5th of November 2010. Check out our website for more news and information on the event! We hope to see you in Extravaganza again this year!

Successful candidates who clear the Interview stage will go up for campaigning and election during our Annual General Meeting on the 22nd of September.

Welcome Tea BONUS! "CALYPSO AGENCY" Screening

We have an added treat for those joining us for our welcome tea session. Join us for the world premiere of the Animation short, "CALYPSO AGENCY", to be screened during our welcome tea session! Produced here in NTU using a new animation program, CACANI, developed by the NTU GAMELAB. Get to meet the production team members such as director Jose Andres Valesco as well as other members of the production team during the session. They would very much like to hear of your feedback on the short!

If you cannot catch it during our welcome tea, come down on 9th September Thursday at LT 19A from 2:30pm to 3pm, or 3pm to 3:30pm for repeat screenings of the short.

Another Successful Affiliation: KKnM and Genesis Frontier

Hello to fellow VAS members,

We got some good news for all of you. Denise and Joan went to KKnM (Kareshi Kanojyo no Mise) and Genesis Frontier today and successfully discussed an affiliation.

KKnM and Genesis Frontier will be giving VAS club members a 5% discount upon flashing our membership card. In return, we will have to help them advertise by putting their logo on our NTU VAS website.

I'm sure most of us know about KKnM (Kareshi Kanojo no Mise). KKnM has already sponsored us prizes on several occasions in the past. KKnM has agreed to sponsor us prizes for our Arts Fiesta if we help them sell some of their stuff at the booth as consignment during the Arts Fiesta. Joan will follow up with them nearer to the date of the Arts Fiesta

KKnM also hopes to collaborate with us with their events if any since we decided that a long term affiliation would be beneficial to our club.

7. We would like to encourage participants to express their creativity to the maximum. Any drawing style is acceptable as long as there are no elements that might deemed inappropriate, offensive or sensitive (e.g. nudity, racism, violence).

8. Characters drawn can be from existing anime/manga titles or self-created original characters.

9. Every art will be judged based on the originality of the idea, be it from an existing anime/manga (e.g. Naruto, Bleach etc.) or a self-created character.

10. Romance can be depicted but no overly explicit sexual elements are allowed.

11. All submitted pieces will be kept by Pan-In-The-Box for a period of three months after the event to be displayed in the shop. Artists may collect their submission after this period of time from Pan-In-The-Box.

12. Pan-In-The-Box will acknowledge and credit the creators when displaying submitted art pieces in the shop.

13. Prizes won can be used only at Pan-In-The-Box outlets.

14. Failure to submit the final piece with drawing papers issued by Pan-In-The-Box by the deadline will result in instant disqualification from the competition.

15. The judges’ decisions are final.

16. Pan-In-The-Box reserves the right to make any last minute changes or sudden cancellation of the event.

The aim is to increase awareness of visual arts among the students in NTU through the exhibition of 3D drawings and displays.

These pictures will give the viewer 3D effects. But not everyone has the ability to see the 3D images from such pictures straightaway.

This requires a special viewing technique to combine parts of the drawing into the 3D image.

Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2009

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) for NTU Visual Arts Society was held on 2nd September 2009, Wednesday, at LT4, North Spine, 8:00pm.

The 23rd Committee gave a coverage of the past academic year's achievements, including the VAS-organized event for Arts Fiesta 2009. Past members spoke on milestones - successes and technical difficulties alike - during their course of the journey since August 2008.

Newly-elected and selected members for the main committee were also present to give presentations on their position portfolios, to allow VAS members to vote for the new main committee members. After the results were released, the 24th Committee became finalized and assembled, the old main committee then passed down the torch to the newer committee members to continue the life of VAS.

We do hope that the new team could accomplish just as well, if not better than, the previous committee in organizing events for Visual Arts Society, as well as spread the love for the visual art medium - animation, comics and graphic design alike.

Straight after our Welcome Tea session, the VAS will be conducting a recruitment drive for all levels of membership, including Main Committee members. For all you aspiring Maincommers out there, the first step to become one is to go through our Main Committee Recruitment Interviews, held on the 27th and 28th of August (Thurs & Fri) 7pm at TR 4 . Come down on either of these days, and we’ll see if you have what it takes to accept a maincomm position. There is no prerequisites to join! Even first years are welcome to apply! If you find that those timings are not agreeable with you, send us an e-mail and we’ll try to make alternative arrangments!

After getting through the interviews, the next phase would be the main comm elections held during our Annual General Meeting on a yet to be confirmed date. Better start getting prepared to woo the voters over with a speech!

You may be wondering, what Main Comm positions are up for grabs. Here’s a basic list of club portfolio positions that are open for the elections:

Publicity I/C (2 X positions)
Business Management (2 X positions)
Logistics (2 X positions)
Project Management (2 X positions)

In addition, each of the three subclubs have Chairperson and Vice-Chairpersonpositions that are up for re-election, including our very own AnimeWorks! We really hope to see people dedicated to our line of interest stepping up to take a shot!

Ever took a digital photo with flaws but do not know how to correct them? Tired of having photos that are too dark? Feel frustrated when you have ideas for designing posters but simply do not know how to express them?

Then our Photoshop Course 2009 is an event you should look forward to!

We provide tips and tricks of editing digital photos to correct common digital flaws and make them decent enough to display them proudly in Facebook. Tips such as removing acnes, touching up backgrounds, creating photo frames and other practical tips are presented in the Photo Editing Course. Whereas for the Poster Designing course, we will be sharing techniques on how to create an interesting and attractive poster.

The Photoshop Course will be held on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of February 2009. Further details are stated in the poster attached.

KALEIDOSCOPE 2008

In its 2nd year running, Kaleidoscope is an event jointly organised by Collateral Damage Studios and NUS Comics and Animation Society that showcases digital artwork from local and regional talent, and all aspiring artists are welcome to send in their submissions.

This year the event is expanding beyond just Anime-based artwork, and encompassing digital art of all forms. While the last Kaleidoscope was held at Suntec, this year it will be held at Funan the IT Mall from 1-2Nov 2008, 11am-9pm on both days.

The NTU Visual Arts Society remains a firm supporter of this event. If you are interested in sending in your artwork for display, the NTUVAS is helping to collect submissions from the NTU student population. It doesn’t matter if the artwork involved is 3D modeling, 2D art, or not even digital at all, you can send in your submissions to ntucomicsensemble@yahoo.com.sg by the deadline of 14/10/2008, and we’ll help you showcase it during the two day event.

The Organisers have outlined a few guidelines that submissions must follow, so please do take a look at them before sending in your work:

“Submission Requirements For Artwork:

we require the artwork to be a 300 dpi JPG file.

- At least 300 dpi 2480×3508 pixels A4 size image

Submission Requirements For Other Media

- A render of the image with resolution of 300 dpi 2480×3508 pixels.

Guidelines to follow:

- Please do remember to credit yourself.
- If the artwork is a fanart, please do also credit the original creators.

- Also, if you are part of a Studio/ Art group, pleae do specify if you want to be listed under them or as an individual.
- Studios and Artgroups are advised to send a logo so we can make labels for you”

Comics Illustration Workshop

For those out there who want to learn how to draw, Comics Illustration Workshop is here again! This time is on 23October Thursday 7-9pm at SAC meeting room2 (somehow room2 is easier to book). The workshop will be conducted by TKG Comics Circle. For more information about TKG, click on the link at the side or go to www.tkgcc.com. And the rates offered are much more affordable than external courses. $7 for non-member and $5 for members. Subcommers (anime, comics, designers) will be paying $3 for it. Where normal rates can be at $30 or more per session.

The First Ever Manga Drawing Sessions are here! Both sessions will be held in October- 9th and 22nd 2008. 9th Oct: 7-9pm and 22nd Oct: 6-8pm. CROSS EYES 2008

The major aim is to build an awareness of Visual Arts among the students in NTU through the exhibition of 3D drawings. We will be putting up 20 3D displays for you to view.The drawing is an art form that gives the viewer a 3D effect. However, not everyone have the ability to see the 3D images from the drawings straight away as this requires a special technique to fuse parts of the drawing into a 3D image.

Animation Revelation 2008

To all NTU students! It’s coming. That’s right folks! Our club’s long awaited Free Anime screening event! This October, our first “Animation Revelation” screening event will be held! We’re bringing you not One. Not Two. But THREE featured Anime movies! One movie each for three consecutive evenings from 7pm onwards, on the 13/10/2008 (Tuesday) to 15/10/2008 (Wednesday).

So why Animation Revelation? Well, we hope that in attending our event, you will be able to gain new insights into the world of Animation. As you all know, we here in AnimeWorks LOVE our anime. We believe animation opens up whole new worlds of possiblities in storytelling and art, and we’d like to share that sentiment with you all by showcasing some of the finest animation works ever produced.

Designer's Voyage

Designer's Voyage 2008 was held on 8th Oct at Student Activity Center Meeting Room 2. Designer’s Voyage is organized by the Designer’s Club of Visual Arts Society, this event’s objective is to guide participants through the ocean of designs, from giving insights about different forms of designs, to sharing various tips and tricks in photo editing and graphic designing. This event also opens up the doors to knowledge regarding the industry of designs – how it is related to us and what is its impact on us. A 2-hour exposure to visual arts begins here:

Welcome to Designer's Voyage 2008!!The event will be started in 10 more minutes...

The Chairperson & the Vice-chairperson of Designer's Club together with their subcoms were checking their slides to ensure that everything was going well...

The voyage started by showing and description of various artworks of some famous artists like Stanley Lau, Tamilia Tatjana etc. Dennice,the chairperson was explaining how the picture is done using software like photoshops...

Slide show time:Yu yuan and Dennice introdue the world of acts to the participles...the topic include history of arts,various form of arts, digital photo painting,website designing,poster designing,etc...

Tips sharing:Dennice & Yuyuan are sharing how to use photoshops to make your skin look smooth and clean in digital photo...

Q&A session:
Dennnice :"Anyone got any question please rise up your hand."

Our formal president helped to answer the question brought out by one of the participles...

Sharing session:All the participles were discussing and sharing their experiences in arts $ design...

One of the participles shared his tip on how to make a water drop effect in the face...wow!!

Even a passer-by was attracted by the presentation...feel free to come in..it was free of charge!!

The voyage was coming to the end...someone was enjoying funny photo shooting with the picture...

appreciating the design's work once more before leaving...

Subcom Recruitment 08/09

The Subcommitee Recruitment of year 2008 and 2009 took place on 16th of September(Tuesday) at outside LT1A and 17th of September(Wednesday) at canteen B....

The sun was round and the sky was blue...after setting up the booth,we left some maincoms to man the booth...

Many people walked by...some of them just walked away...some of them take a quick look then walked away...some of them take a longer look and walked away...but...some of them came to register^^

There are no PnP subcom yet!!Therefore, no people taking any pictures on the event =.=...and nobody knows what actually happen on that 2 days except for the people on duty themselves...

In the end..we manage to recruit quite a number of members and subcoms...some of them register through email=P
